Never Underestimate the Awesome Power of Free-Style Dancing!

For thousands of years dance has been an essential part of human interactions. To this day, this is how we celebrate, how we flirt, how we express ourselves freely.
But do you ever think of free-styling by yourself in the privacy and comfort of your own home?
While many physicians recommend 5 hours of exercice weekly, how many of us manage even 30 minutes a day? We run out of time to hit the gym, miss most dance classes than we attend, find it's too cold to go on that run...which is why I highly recommend to simply turn on your favorite music at home, and for 10 minutes, 20 minutes, 30 minutes, for as long as you wish, let your body move to the rhythm, let your mind go, and express yourself as freely as you feel!
If you've never done this before:

  • Take your shoes and socks off, and wear comfortable clothes.
  • If you feel tension anywhere, stretch and warm up where needed.
  • When you're ready, select songs you feel dancing to, preferably put them at random.
  • Then close your eyes and tune in to the music, letting your body move whenever it wishes to, possibly exploring movements (small or large) which are not part of your habits. Once you've found the groove, open your eyes and keep moving according to the music and your inner desires.

Remember to be gentle to yourself, and to welcome new sensations: this is to get your body moving and feeling, it doesn't have to be an intense work out (though it can be sometimes).
We often feel self-conscious even when we're by ourselves, so if you feel this is holding you back, slowly give in to the music and to what feels good to your body, you're doing this to enjoy yourself, not to impress yourself or look perfect.
Have fun, you have a room and a fabulous track list all to yourself!
Once you've had enough, stretch again a little to cool off, and stand up, lying down or sitting, close your eyes, take a few slow breaths and listen to your entire body.

This simple time to yourself will get your body moving and may well lift your spirits too.
It won't cost you a thing, but it might be worth a lot in health, energy, and simple joy!
